Minneapolis Faces Welfare Scandal Amid Gubernatorial Race

Minneapolis is currently grappling with a substantial welfare scandal, estimated at around $1 billion. Dr. Scott Jensen, a Republican candidate for governor in Minnesota, stated in an interview that he holds Governor Tim Walz directly accountable for the situation. Jensen characterized the situation as a “cover-up” that he believes is “worse than Watergate.”

This controversy has gained traction in the gubernatorial campaign, especially as it involves the alleged exploitation of COVID-19 relief funds by the Minnesota nonprofit Feeding Our Future. Prosecutors have identified this as one of the largest COVID-19 fraud schemes in the country, with claims that the organization and its partners defrauded federal child nutrition programs out of vast sums of money.

“I think it’s impossible to address Minnesota’s budget without acknowledging that spending has to stop at some point,” Jensen remarked. “Ultimately, responsibility lies with the governor. He is, after all, effectively the CEO of Minnesota and manages state operations. Tim Walz’s failures are a blatant dereliction of duty and are, frankly, dismantling rational governance.”

Jensen elaborated that evidence suggests Walz was aware of the “Feed the Future” issues long before he publicly acknowledged them and misrepresented the actions taken by his administration.

“In 2020, both Tim Walz and the Minnesota Department of Education were aware of the issues. Yet it took until 2021 for them to involve the FBI,” he said. “Their claims about reacting promptly to the situation are, well, not accurate. Their timeline is off by a year.”

He contends that the delay signifies more than just poor management; it’s indicative of a continuing trend of dishonesty within the governor’s office.

Jensen highlighted several instances where Walz allegedly deflected responsibility. After the FBI’s first indictment linked to the scandal in 2022, Walz suggested that U.S. District Court Judge John Guzman was to blame for allowing fraudulent payments to persist.

During that period, Guzman publicly admonished Walz for providing misleading information.

“When Judge Guzman made his statement, it was clear that Walz and Keith Ellison were trying to shift blame onto someone else who could be held accountable,” Jensen observed. “They accused the FBI of insisting that they keep approving payments due to the ongoing investigation. But the FBI clarified they hadn’t sanctioned those fraudulent payments.”

Jensen believes that the emerging details of the scandal’s “cover-up” represent a major issue that cannot be ignored.

“It raises a significant question: is there something more sinister at play?” he asked. “Are we looking at the potential for fund seizures to ensure reimbursements? Could there be undisclosed pay-to-play schemes? These possibilities are troubling, and they prompt us to consider whether criminal charges against some Minnesota officials might become necessary.”

Recently, the federal government has stepped in to investigate the scandal further. The Small Business Administration revealed that Governor Walz’s office is looking into a network of Somali organizations implicated in the COVID-19 fraud.

House Oversight Chairman James Comer remarked that Walz’s inaction allowed for significant theft from the program, leading to suffering among children. He is spearheading the inquiry into Walz’s involvement in the Feeding Our Future debacle.

Additionally, former President Donald Trump announced new measures to investigate fraud schemes in Minnesota, alleging it as a hub for money laundering activities, which also played a role in his decision to revoke deportation protections for numerous Somali immigrants.

During recent investigations, it was revealed that a Treasury Department probe is underway to examine how taxpayer funds may have been redirected to the terrorist group al-Shabaab.

Jensen reflected on the broader implications of the scandal, noting its resemblance to Watergate and expressing concern that things could escalate further.

When asked about Governor Walz’s legacy, Jensen remarked, “I think Tim Walz will be remembered for an unprecedented level of fraud, and his policies might align him more with figures like AOC and Bernie Sanders than with the moderate image some might have had of him in his earlier days.”

Efforts to obtain a response from Walz’s office are ongoing.
