Greece’s Foreign Minister on US-EU Relations
Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis expressed admiration for President Donald Trump’s role in guiding the world towards a “more peaceful and prosperous future” during an interview at the Doha Forum with Breitbart News’ Matthew Boyle.
In Doha, Qatar, Boyle inquired about Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ accurate prediction concerning a beneficial trade agreement between the European Union and the United States.
“Looking back at this historical moment regarding the US-EU relationship and Greece’s part in it, what are your thoughts?” he asked.
“I must say, the prime minister is quite visionary… he saw early on the direction that the new leadership in the United States would take towards Europe and beyond,” Gerapetritis responded. He noted that Trump’s leadership introduced what he characterized as a “different governance model.”
This shift, he believed, was crucial in prompting European nations to reconsider their foundational approaches. “And I think this has, in a way, spurred us to reevaluate our fundamentals in Europe and consider how we can achieve greater self-reliance, pursue more comprehensive economic policies, and establish a fair balance with the United States. Ultimately, as you mentioned, it’s mutually beneficial,” he remarked.
“To be honest, in Europe over the past ten months, our perspective has shifted. Our NATO interactions have gained significance. We’ve developed a new concept regarding European defense capabilities, implementing two major program maps aimed at strengthening our defense and deterring potential threats,” Gerapetritis added. He then revisited the topic of trade and its implications under Trump’s influence.
“Trade and defense go hand in hand. Regarding trade, we have discovered an effective formula that benefits both sides, and I believe there’s room for progress,” he explained, adding that Prime Minister Mitsotakis is dedicated to enhancing not just the EU-US relationship but also the one between the US and Greece. He remarked that the relations currently stand at “the highest level” and proclaimed this to be a historic moment before commending President Trump.
“We should recognize the efforts of the new American administration in steering the world toward a more peaceful and prosperous future,” he concluded.
