Fire at Nightclub in Goa Claims 25 Lives

A tragic fire occurred at a nightclub in Arpora, Goa, India, on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of 25 individuals and leaving six others injured. The injured are reportedly in stable condition.

Goa’s Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, announced that a civil investigation has been initiated regarding the incident. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow, saying, “This is very sad. My thoughts are with all the families affected. I hope for a quick recovery for the injured. I’ve been in touch with Dr. Pramod Sawant regarding the situation, and the state government is ensuring support for those impacted.”

Initial reports suggested that an exploding gas cylinder might be the cause. However, eyewitnesses, including a tourist named Riya from New Delhi, stated that the fire likely started due to firecrackers being ignited during performances. Riya described a chaotic atmosphere when the fire broke out, mentioning a stampede-like situation as people rushed to escape.

Another tourist, Fatima Shaikh, recounted that when the fire began, over 100 people were on the dance floor. In the panic, some headed towards the kitchen and became trapped along with the staff. “There was a sudden eruption of flames,” she explained, recalling how they hurried outside only to witness the building engulfed in fire.

Preliminary inquiries indicated the fire originated on the ground floor and that many were unable to exit due to crowding and narrow escape routes. Sawant noted, “Some rushed to the first floor and got stuck there. We will hold the club management accountable, especially since safety regulations were apparently ignored. This is unfortunate, particularly during the peak tourist season.”
