Big 12 Conference Fines Iowa State and Kansas State
The Iowa State Cyclones and Kansas State Wildcats are facing significant penalties for opting out of Sunday’s college football bowl game. The Big 12 Conference has announced that both schools will have to pay a fine of $500,000 each due to their decisions.
The conference stated, “The Big 12 Conference will fine Iowa and Kansas $500,000 for opting out of Kansas’ bowl pool participation.” They further emphasized that, while they understand the challenges posed by coaching changes, they still have contractual obligations that must be honored.
Iowa State finished the season with an 8-4 record, while Kansas State ended at 6-6. Both teams achieved the necessary six wins to qualify for a bowl game. However, recent events left both schools in difficult situations. Kansas State’s head coach Chris Klieman recently announced his retirement, and Iowa State’s Matt Campbell accepted a position at Penn State.
Iowa State officials, along with the previous coaching staff, met with players on Sunday to discuss their interest in participating in a bowl game. Athletic Director Jamie Pollard remarked, “The administrative staff and coaches respect and support the players’ decisions. Our student-athletes had a great season, and we appreciate their leadership during this process.”
Meanwhile, Kansas State Athletic Director Gene Taylor mentioned he consulted with players and Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark before arriving at the decision to withdraw.
He added, “This decision was not made lightly. Given the coaching changes and uncertainty surrounding player acquisitions, we believed it wasn’t in our best interest to field a team that does not represent Kansas State University. I commend this group for battling back from a 2-4 deficit to earn bowl eligibility, and I’m happy our seniors ended on a high note at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.”
