Mayor-Elect Zoran Mamdani Advocates for Immigrant Rights in NYC
On Sunday, New York City’s upcoming mayor, Zoran Mamdani, shared a video outlining the rights of New Yorkers in dealings with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This follows an attempted raid in Manhattan, during which Mamdani assured that his administration would prioritize the protection of immigrant communities and the right to protest as guaranteed by the Constitution.
The video comes at a time when state officials are under increased scrutiny regarding immigration enforcement. Mamdani emphasized the need for New Yorkers to be informed and confident in asserting their rights as he prepares to counter what he describes as federal actions that endanger immigrant communities.
Recalling the recent ICE raid, Mamdani stated, “As mayor, I will protect the rights of every New Yorker, including the more than 3 million immigrants who call this city home. But all of us can stand up to ICE if we know our rights.”
He offered practical advice for immigrants encountering ICE, stressing that without a judicial warrant signed by a judge, agents cannot enter private spaces. “If ICE does not have a judicial warrant signed by a judge, you have the right to say, ‘I do not consent to entry,’ and keep the door closed,” he explained, adding that while ICE may claim authority, their actions can be misleading.
Furthermore, he advised individuals to remain calm during interactions, avoid obstructing investigations, and simply ask if they are free to go. Interestingly, he noted that photographing ICE officers is permissible, provided it doesn’t interfere with their activities.
Mamdani also reaffirmed New Yorkers’ constitutional right to protest, vowing to protect this right if elected mayor. “New York has always welcomed immigrants, and I fight every day to protect, support, and celebrate our immigrant brothers and sisters,” he asserted.
This video was released shortly after Mamdani’s meeting with President Donald Trump, which seemed to mark a shift in their relationship, particularly concerning issues of affordability and improving living conditions in New York. However, Mamdani reiterated New York’s status as a sanctuary city, emphasizing that the city would uphold its own laws, especially in the face of federal collaboration.
He concluded, “My focus as the next mayor of this city will be to protect the immigrants who call this city home.”
