Armed Suspect Injured Police Officers During Gas Station Shootout

An armed man, identified as Juan Melgar Ayala, is accused of shooting at a 61-year-old man and injuring four police officers during a confrontation at a gas station in Omaha, Nebraska. Ayala, a 28-year-old from El Salvador, was killed by responding officers at the scene on Wednesday.

Authorities reported that Ayala was running from a prior incident in which he allegedly shot the elderly man at a nearby grocery store. They noted that, at this time, there doesn’t seem to be any clear motive or connection between them.

“Juan Melgar Ayala, a convicted felon who entered our country illegally from El Salvador, started a shootout with Omaha police this week and paid the price,” said Governor Jim Pillen.

Court documents reveal that Ayala had a history of felony robbery charges in Douglas County. He reportedly pled no contest in 2021 to multiple theft-related charges and had other traffic violations, including driving without a valid license.

Omaha police are investigating how Ayala obtained the handguns used during the violent incidents. It’s been reported that his family stated he faced mental health issues.

Six officers pursued Ayala to the QuikTrip, where he allegedly donned a mask and fled to the men’s restroom. A witness inside the restroom was later rescued. During the altercation, Ayala fired over 16 shots, injuring four officers before being killed.

The injured officers include Sergeant Emilio Luna, Detective Brock Rengo, Detective Jordan Brandt, and Detective Christopher Brown, all of whom sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Fortunately, two other officers, Detective Kyle Graber and Sergeant Jonathan Holtrop, were unharmed.

Prior to the shootout, Ayala shot at Michael Kasper, 61, at a grocery store, critically injuring him. Police recovered 15 shell casings from the scene, and while Kasper is expected to survive, he remains hospitalized.

In light of the events, Governor Pillen criticized federal border policies, claiming that they allowed dangerous individuals to enter the state. “Sadly, after years of lax border security policies, every state is now a border state,” he remarked, emphasizing the need for continuous efforts to keep Nebraska and America safe.
