Omar Compares Miller’s Immigration Comments to Nazi Rhetoric
During a recent interview, Rep. Ilhan Omar from Minnesota drew a stark parallel between comments made by acting chief of staff Stephen Miller regarding immigration and the rhetoric used by Nazis against Jews. When CBS host Margaret Brennan inquired about Miller’s remarks, Omar did not hold back.
Miller’s comments suggested that immigrants perpetuate the same conditions from their home countries. He stated that “magical transformation does not occur when failed states cross their borders.” Omar called this “white supremacist rhetoric” and argued it echoed the way Jews were portrayed during the Nazi regime. She reflected on historical narratives, mentioning how immigrants from Irish backgrounds faced similar hostility: “We know how people were portrayed back in the day when we had Italian immigrants.”
She emphasized her identity, asserting, “Sure, I am ethnically Somali, but we are Americans. We are a productive part of this country.” The White House, however, did not provide any comments on the matter.
Meanwhile, President Trump has criticized Minnesota’s Somali community amid controversy surrounding a fraud scheme related to the state’s “Feeding Our Future” program. Over seventy individuals have been implicated, although the architect behind the scheme is not part of the Somali community.
Following Trump’s remarks, Omar expressed her discontent, stating, “It’s disgusting. The people he’s calling trash are Americans.” She added that his fixation with the Somali community seems unhealthy and described his language as dehumanizing, warning that it could incite harmful actions.
In a CNN interview, Omar discussed the impact of rapid implementation of COVID-19 assistance programs, asserting that the haste led to inadequate safeguards and increased vulnerability to fraud.
