Real Estate Leadership Changes Across Asia

Today’s real estate news highlights significant moves among major investment firms in Asia. Malaysia’s Employee Provident Fund (EPF) has appointed a new Chief Investment Officer, while in China, Country Garden Ltd. has named a new co-chair. Additionally, Singapore’s Day One Data Centers is expanding its leadership team as it seeks to grow its presence.

The Malaysian EPF has named Mohammad Hafiz Qasim as its new Chief Investment Officer, replacing Rohaya Mohammad Yusof after she served five years in that role. Ahmad Rizal Omar steps into the position of Chief Financial Officer, taking over from Mohammad Hafiz. It’s worth noting that Hafiz has been with EPF for over 17 years, which really speaks to his experience.

Meanwhile, in China, Country Garden Holdings made headlines with the appointment of Mobin as co-chairman, a move effective immediately, as announced on December 4th. His tenure at Country Garden began in 2010, and he previously held the title of president. This leadership change comes at a critical time for the company as it navigates debt restructuring challenges.

On another front, David Chong has been promoted to partner at KKR, now serving as the sole representative from the real estate division in Tokyo. His promotion, confirmed in a recent announcement, marks a significant step in his career, especially considering his long history with the firm, starting back in 2015.

In Singapore, Kokchae Ong joins DayOne Data Centers after four years at Gaw Capital Partners, where he significantly contributed to strategy for data centers. This fresh addition to the leadership team aligns with DayOne’s goals for substantial growth, especially as they look forward to a reported $2 billion funding round.

Moreover, Chen Ziyang has been appointed chief investment officer at Digital Halo, while Helen Singh Hsu will serve as vice president of sales. Ziyang’s transition followed a successful stint at CBRE, highlighting the firm’s push into new markets.

Meanwhile, Shelson Lim has moved up to managing director at SC Capital Partners, marking over eight years with the firm. His journey included over three years as an executive director with a private equity fund manager, illustrating his steady climb through the ranks.

Additionally, in a somewhat unsettling development, former vice president of Tahoe Group, Huang Xi, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for bribery, which certainly raises eyebrows. His conviction stemmed from allegations dating back to 2018, relating to securing loans for developers.

Lastly, in Hong Kong, Helen Lo was appointed managing director at SUNeVision, a move that follows her rapid ascent through prominent roles at Tencent Music and Sun Hung Kai Properties. Her experience seems to bring a wealth of talent to the firm just at the right time.

These leadership transitions suggest a dynamic landscape in the real estate sector across Asia, with companies adapting and evolving in response to their respective challenges and opportunities.
