There’s no need to wait for LeBron James to retire; the next superstar has arrived, and he’s called Wemby.

Spurs' Victor Wembanyama ejected for the first time after aggressive elbow in Western Conference semifinals

NBA Playoffs and the Future of Superstars

The NBA playoffs are currently underway, yet conversations are already surfacing about whether LeBron James has played his final game. It’s an intriguing topic that always leads to speculation about who might be the “next superstar.”

When Michael Jordan retired, he passed the torch to Kobe Bryant, who eventually saw LeBron take it from him. LeBron has donned that crown for nearly twenty years now. This cycle, much like a “Circle of Life,” unfolds in the NBA each time a legendary player steps away. Interestingly, we may not even need to wait for LeBron to announce his retirement to consider who follows him.

LeBron James Reflects on His Uncertain NBA Future

The “next big name” has already emerged: Victor Wembanyama. Some might say I’m jumping the gun here, but I genuinely think Wemby, currently playing for the San Antonio Spurs, belongs in the conversation about the sport’s greatest. I’ve discussed him frequently, and for good reason.

Spurs’ Wembanyama Dazzles with Dominance in Recent Games

This 7-foot-4 French player offers an unparalleled blend of skill and physicality that’s rarely been seen before now. I mean, even back when he was just a 17-year-old in France, people were raving about how he shot like Dirk Nowitzki and dribbled like a point guard. It felt premature then to label him the next GOAT, but those predictions were spot on.

Fast forward to 2026, and Wemby has already racked up accolades, including being a two-time NBA All-Star and a Defensive Player of the Year, not to mention leading the league in blocks for three consecutive seasons. His recent performance—27 points, 17 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 blocks—has put the Spurs just one win away from the Western Conference Finals after nearly a decade.

And it’s not just me saying this. Many Hall of Famers believe Wemby is already on track to be the GOAT at the tender age of 22. For instance, Paul Pierce, an NBA champion, recently remarked on a podcast that Wemby is “the most complete player in the history of the game.” That’s quite a statement. Shaquille O’Neal also considers him potentially the best center ever.

What I’m trying to convey is: don’t hesitate to embrace the Wemby hype, because it seems like the train has already left the station. If he leads the Spurs past the Timberwolves and can somehow outmatch the formidable 64-win Thunder to reach the NBA Finals, San Antonio could very well be favored to take home the championship.

Wemby: The Future is Bright

Should that scenario unfold, Wemby will have the championship ring, the accolades, and a firm grip on the league—all by age 22. If you haven’t invested in Wemby, you might already be too late. The next “GOAT” is right around the corner.
