Concerns Over Criminal Alien Releases in Illinois

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has raised alarms about Illinois releasing illegal immigrants who have committed violent offenses, despite holding them in custody. This, they argue, poses a significant public safety risk.

In a communication shared publicly, ICE Director Todd Lyons highlighted that “tens of thousands of criminal illegal aliens” are currently detained in the state. These individuals have been convicted of serious crimes, including murder, rape, and armed robbery, among others.

Lyons emphasized that such criminals “should be swiftly removed from the United States,” rather than being allowed back into communities where they could cause harm to law-abiding citizens.

Since January 2025, records indicate that Illinois has released 1,768 criminal aliens who, in many cases, were still facing charges. These offenses range widely, encompassing murder, robbery, and various sexual crimes.

ICE also noted that there are still 4,015 criminal aliens in state or local custody pending removal, implicated in serious crimes like 51 murders and over 800 cases related to sexual offenses.

Among those released was Victor Manuel Mendoza-Garcia, convicted of aggravated kidnapping, and Juan Morales Martinez, associated with a fatal vehicle accident. ICE pointed out that in both instances, local authorities neglected to inform them prior to these individuals being released.

Other troubling cases involved offenders found guilty of child abduction and sexual assault, showing a pattern of serious mismanagement by Illinois authorities.

Lyons questioned the state’s commitment to change its approach, expressing concern that violent criminals might re-enter society, potentially endangering residents in Illinois.
