Patient Reportedly Stabs Social Worker With Steak Knife In Hospital Troubled By Violence, Authorities Indicate

Stabbing Incident at San Francisco Hospital

A social worker was allegedly killed by a patient inside a hospital in San Francisco, according to the police.

Wilfredo Tortorello Arrieci, 34, was arrested following the attack on December 4 at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. The unfortunate victim succumbed to injuries two days later, on December 6, as reported by the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD). Initially, the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department misidentified the suspect as 35 years old.

Arrieci faces charges that include attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and mayhem, among others. The homicide unit is currently overseeing the investigation and may revise the charges as needed.

According to the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department’s statement, Arrieci had been booked into the hospital when staff alerted security. He reportedly made threats toward a doctor in Ward 86, which is designated for HIV/AIDS treatment on the sixth floor. ABC News mentioned that the staff had reached out for help after the threats were made.

Deputies were dispatched to safeguard the doctor when they heard disturbances and discovered Arrieci attacking a social worker. Officers apprehended him and secured the area, recovering a 5-inch steak knife thought to be the weapon used in the attack.

The victim, a 51-year-old social worker affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), sustained severe stab wounds to the neck and shoulder. Initially, police had claimed the worker was 31 years old.

The San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs Association criticized the Department of Public Health for reducing deputy sheriff roles and shifting to a “response-only” security approach. As noted by union president Ken Lomba, historical data indicates a trend of serious assaults and weapon use on hospital premises.

Meanwhile, UPTE-CWA 9119, the union for UCSF employees, is calling for a thorough investigation into the incident. The union president, Dan Russell, described the victim as an “outstanding, caring and dedicated social worker.” He emphasized the need for change, stating, “We owe our colleagues and friends more than just grief. We owe them change, and we will fight tooth and nail to make it happen.”

The Daily Caller attempted to contact the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department for further information but did not receive a reply by the time of this report.
