Bill Maher Challenges Leftist Guest on Blaming 'White People' for Islamic Oppression

Bill Maher and Anna Kasparian Debate Women’s Oppression in the Middle East

On Monday, comedian and political commentator Bill Maher engaged in a debate with Anna Kasparian from “The Young Turks.” The discussion centered around the impact of Western intervention in the Middle East, particularly regarding women’s rights in Islamic nations.

Kasparian remarked, in a podcast appearance, that wearing a dress in certain Middle Eastern countries might feel uncomfortable due to the instability caused by the actions of the United States and other Western nations. Maher, however, downplayed her perspective, attributing women’s oppression in these countries more directly to Islamic law.

“It might not be comfortable to wear this dress in different parts of the Middle East, considering the instability there,” she commented.

“You’re not blaming Whitey, are you?” Maher retorted. “Are you blaming Islam for Whitey?”

“I’m not blaming Islam on white people… Didn’t we contribute to the destabilization? During the Syrian civil war under the Obama administration, we were supporting various groups in Syria,” Kasparian responded. “Didn’t that lead to instability in Syria?”

Maher suggested that Kasparian was evading the question, implying that she didn’t want to confront Islam’s accountability in the oppression faced by women.

“The real question is, do you have to pick a city?” he asked. “You’re dodging the question like politicians do, saying, ‘I want to live in America.’ That’s not it. Would you choose to live in Tel Aviv? I mean, if you had to pick somewhere, think about it. But we both know the differences that exist between cultures.”

Kasparian acknowledged that she would feel safer in Israel but did not shy away from critiquing Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip. She has been outspoken about Israel, accusing it of committing severe violations of human rights, labeling it a “state of terror.”
