Trump urges Indiana GOP senators to approve a new redistricting plan

Trump Pressures Indiana Republicans for Redistricting

Former President Donald Trump, along with his supporters, is intensifying pressure on Indiana’s Republican senators who are hesitant to comply with his demands for congressional redistricting in the state.

The Indiana Senate resumed sessions on Monday, just three days after the state House approved new redistricting maps that favor Trump, adding two more right-leaning congressional districts in this predominantly Republican state. Currently, Republicans hold seven of Indiana’s nine House seats.

This move in Indiana follows a significant decision in Texas, where the Republican-led state enabled a newly designed map, securing five additional right-wing House seats.

The developments in Indiana form part of Trump’s broader strategy aimed at redistricting nationwide ahead of the 2026 midterms, where Republicans are expected to encounter typical challenges in maintaining their slim House majority.

Indiana House Passes Redistricting Bill

The Indiana House managed to pass the redistricting measure with a 57-41 supermajority, though over a dozen Republicans voted against it. The situation escalates this week as the state Senate, which has so far resisted Trump’s redistricting endeavors, is set to vote on the approved bill later this week.

Senate Republican Leader Roderick Bray has voiced doubts about enough support in the chamber, with a proxy vote showing a tie of 19-19 last month.

In a recent social media post, Trump criticized Bray for his lack of dedication to maintaining the House majority in Washington, suggesting Bray’s indifference could lead to significant political consequences. Bray has indicated the Senate will reconvene to address the contentious redistricting issue, which has garnered considerable attention and caused discord within the state’s legislature.

A decisive Senate vote is anticipated on Thursday.

Trump is actively leveraging his influence to make Indiana more Republican-friendly with a revamped congressional map. He has reached out directly to state legislators, with Vice President J.D. Vance making two visits to the state earlier this fall to discuss redistricting.

This past weekend, Trump made two posts on social media reinforcing his demands. He questioned why true Republicans would oppose a measure that Democrats have used for years, warning that those who do could face electoral repercussions. Additionally, he emphasized the urgency for the Senate to pass the map and expedite it to Governor Mike Brown’s desk.

Pressure Mounts on State Republicans

Turning Point Action and the Club for Growth Action, aligned with Trump, are spending substantial sums on pro-redistricting advertisements aimed at Indiana, and they’re planning to target Republican lawmakers who resist the new maps.

Club for Growth chairman David McIntosh issued a stern “final warning” to Bray, asserting that failure to support redistricting could lead to serious repercussions at the polls.

Turning Point Action recently organized a rally at the state Capitol, with Brown urging Indiana Senate Republicans to back the redistricting proposal.

This push aligns with Trump’s campaign and the GOP’s larger effort to secure a slender majority in the House before the midterms, during which the ruling party often loses seats.

Trump maintains that they must protect their majority at any cost. Supporting what is a rare mid-decade redistricting, he aims to reverse the losses faced during his first term when Democrats regained control of the House in the 2018 midterms.

Several states, including Texas, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio, have already undertaken redistricting efforts linked to Trump’s agenda, while Florida has initiated steps towards similar legislative changes this week. Even right-leaning Kansas is mulling over new congressional maps.

Despite setbacks, such as a recent ruling from two federal judges in Texas regarding the utilization of the revised maps in upcoming elections, the Supreme Court has approved the new Texas congressional map.

Democratic Counteractions

In retaliation, Democrats are mobilizing as well. Just a month ago, California voters overwhelmingly endorsed Proposition 50, aiming to reallocate redistricting authority back to the Democratic-controlled Legislature, thereby creating five new Democratic-leaning districts to counterbalance the new Republican maps in Texas.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has taken charge of the state’s redistricting efforts, potentially positioning himself as a key Democratic figure for the 2028 presidential run.

Moreover, other Democratic-controlled states like Illinois, Maryland, and Virginia are also seriously contemplating redistricting measures. Recently, a judge in Utah rejected a congressional district map from Republican legislators, opting for a plan that favors Democrats for the 2026 election.
