Emma Wood’s Rise to Stardom
Emma Wood, a 13-year-old eighth grader, is rapidly becoming a global sensation. She claims to be the biggest fan of Taylor Swift, recently highlighted by Spotify’s new feature that tracks the top listeners based on their listening time.
Since January, Emma has logged nearly 500,000 minutes of listening to Swift’s complete collection, with her favorite track being the 2024 ballad titled “Albatross.”
Despite all her listening, Emma expressed surprise at being recognized as the world’s top listener for Swift’s song “Wild Dreams.” She shared her excitement with the Post, stating, “I was in shock. I was like, ‘Oh my God!'” She revealed her top listener status on TikTok on December 4th.
Initially, Emma thought this achievement was limited to the U.S. “I didn’t even know what to feel when I realized it was global,” she noted. She has devoted 449,280 minutes to Swift’s music over a span of 312 days. “It was confusing,” she added, reflecting on her extraordinary listening habits.
Emma’s announcement sparked a buzz online, attracting over 9.7 million viewers. Some social media users celebrated her achievement, while critics dismissed it. One commenter referred to it as “insane” being the top listener of such a popular artist, while another expressed concern over her obsession.
Emma, who couldn’t attend Swift’s concert due to family issues, began her journey as a fan in 2014, influenced by her sister’s love for the hit “Shake It Off.” Her mother, Monica, supports her daughter’s passion and even joked about Emma’s dedication, saying her room is adorned with Swift memorabilia.
Monica, a mother of four, expressed pride in her children finding comfort in Swift’s music. “I realized there was a good reason Emma connected so deeply with Taylor’s songs,” she remarked.
This title didn’t come easily for Emma, who shared that Taylor’s music helped her through challenging times. “Last year, I dealt with severe depression and anxiety, and it was Taylor’s music that calmed me down,” she admitted.
Emma starts and ends her days listening to pop songs, finding solace in them. However, school policies sometimes prevent her from enjoying her favorite tracks during class. “I’d listen secretly through earbuds, but my new school is strict about that,” she shared.
Once school is out, Emma eagerly tunes back into Swift’s music, crediting her as the greatest source of inspiration. “I started playing the violin and trumpet because of her,” she explained. Emma dreams of becoming a singer, poet, or songwriter, fueled by Swift’s journey from a small town to global fame. “I want to be like her someday,” she concluded.
