School District Faces Backlash Over Somali Flag Display
A Vermont school district has stirred significant controversy after raising a Somali flag on campus. The Winooski School District, situated near Burlington, has around 9% of its students from Somali backgrounds. The school hoisted the light blue flag on Monday to “honor Somali Youth and Their Families in Winooski and Vermont.”
Video footage capturing the flag-raising quickly went viral, resulting in a flood of angry reactions. This incident comes in light of alarming revelations regarding a billion-dollar aid fraud involving Somali immigrants in Minnesota.
The intense backlash prompted district officials to temporarily disable their website and disconnect several phone lines on that same Monday, as reported by local outlets.
The district reassured the public, stating, “First, we would like to assure everyone that the U.S. flag is in full compliance with U.S. flag regulations and in its highest proper position.”
According to the school district, three flag masts are present in the area: the American flag on the top, the Vermont state flag in the middle, and the Somali flag on the third mast this week.
Officials explained that the flag would be displayed for one week to support Somali students and their families. They emphasized the district’s commitment to acknowledging the diversity and cultural identity within their schools.
Last week, former President Trump criticized the “Feeding Our Future” fraud case in Minnesota, targeting Representative Ilhan Omar, who represents the area, labeling her a “terrible person.”
Superintendent Wilmer Chavarria stated that the school is facing what appears to be a “national, coordinated campaign” against it. Following the wave of responses, the district redirected calls to voicemail, as many callers reportedly resorted to racial slurs or threats.
The district took precautions by notifying the Winooski Police Department, who arrived on campus to assess the situation.
In response to the flag-raising video, conservative commentator Benny Johnson proposed a controversial suggestion regarding immigration enforcement. Meanwhile, others expressed their outrage, with comments about potential ceremonies that mock the American flag and calls to revoke federal funding for the district.
