Royal Caribbean Passenger’s Death Ruled Homicide After Over-Serving Alcohol
A Royal Caribbean passenger, Michael Virgil, tragically passed away after reportedly being served 33 drinks while on board the ship Navigator of the Seas. This incident, which occurred in December 2024, has been classified as a homicide according to court documents.
Virgil, who had purchased the cruise’s unlimited alcohol package, was among several deluxe beverage package holders who allegedly received as many as 30 drinks before his untimely death. Royal Caribbean promotes its Deluxe Beverage Package as a premier offering, boasting “bottomless beverages” including liquor, beer, wine, and cocktails.
The prices for these packages can vary, typically ranging from $55 to $115 per person, influenced by factors like sailing dates and demand.
On this journey to Mexico, Virgil was traveling with his fiancée and their 7-year-old autistic son. Upon arrival, they faced a delay with their room, leading a crew member to suggest they wait at the bar. After some time, Virgil’s fiancée took their son to check on their accommodations while Virgil chose to remain behind. During this time, he was reportedly offered more alcohol and later left the bar significantly intoxicated, irate over the missing room.
Things escalated when Virgil, in a state of anger, was taken into custody. He was accused of being belligerent, allegedly assaulting both crew members and fellow passengers. The situation intensified, with the crew reportedly using physical restraint against him, administering the sedative haloperidol, and deploying pepper spray multiple times.
His fiancée alleges that the crew’s actions, described as “excessive force and deadly conduct,” contributed to Virgil’s death. She pointed to the use of the sedative and pepper spray as particularly harmful. The autopsy indicated that he suffered from severe hypoxia, respiratory failure, and ultimately cardiopulmonary arrest — all factors leading to the homicide ruling.
In light of this incident, Virgil’s family is pursuing damages for loss of support, future earnings, medical expenses, and emotional distress.
Royal Caribbean has chosen not to make any statements regarding the ongoing legal matters, refraining from comments while litigation is pending.
