Erika Kirk Discusses Grief and Faith in the Wake of Her Husband’s Passing
Erika Kirk reflects on how she’s using her faith to navigate her grief, thanks in part to the emotional rituals created by her late husband, Charlie. Each week, on the Sabbath, he would write her a letter. It’s a practice she cherishes deeply.
“This book is a love letter for me for the rest of my life,” Erika shared during an interview, mentioning Charlie’s last work, “Stop, In God’s Name: Why Honoring the Sabbath Will Change Your Life.”
She describes the release of the book as simultaneously joyous and sorrowful. It’s bittersweet, really. These are her husband’s final words to the world, and she finds herself leaning heavily into her faith to confront her grief.
A Sacred Legacy
Reflecting on their life together, she expressed gratitude amidst her heartache. “What remains is sacred,” she said, highlighting the significance of his words after losing him. Charlie was tragically shot at Utah Valley University on September 10, leaving Erika and their two young children to cope with the aftermath.
Although seeing footage of Charlie with their kids brings her pain, she acknowledges that challenging times force important choices. “Life is tough,” she remarks, acknowledging the reality of her situation.
Finding Strength in Faith
“It’s beautiful, but it’s tough,” Erika explained. She recognizes that the journey through grief requires effort— a conscious decision to lean on her faith. “You can either retreat into despair or move forward,” she noted, admitting that there are days filled with tears.
However, she also spoke about the necessity of transformation, saying, “But are you going to turn that moment into something? God, give me grace. I don’t know how this will work, but I trust you will help me.” It’s this reliance on her faith that has guided her during her darkest hours, particularly when she delivered a heartfelt tribute at his memorial service.
A Community of Support
During a memorial event in Arizona that drew tens of thousands, Erika felt an overwhelming wave of solidarity the moment she took the stage. “If you ask me, singing Hallelujah in a stadium feels like a taste of heaven,” she reflected. It was a powerful and unforgettable experience.
In the wake of Charlie’s death, she continues to honor his memory through speaking engagements, including one at an upcoming Turning Point USA event. The tragic loss led to the completion of his final book, which discusses the profound effects of observing the Sabbath on family ties and personal well-being.
His writing promotes the idea of disconnecting from life’s incessant noise to reconnect with loved ones, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing family and faith. In a world so fast-paced, perhaps his lessons remind us to take that time— to pause, reflect, and truly be present.
