Campus Shooting at Kentucky State University

The man suspected of shooting and killing two students at Kentucky State University has been identified. Jacob Lee Byrd, a 48-year-old from Evansville, Indiana, has been arrested on charges of murder and first-degree assault. It’s worth noting that Byrd is not a student at the university, and authorities haven’t disclosed any details regarding a potential motive for the attack.

Frankfort Police stated that they received reports of a shooting at the Whitney M. Young Jr. residence around 3:10 p.m. They arrived quickly to find that Kentucky State University Police had already detained the suspect.

Witnesses reported seeing a significant police presence at the scene, with multiple vehicles and crime scene tape surrounding the dormitory complex.

Tragically, both victims were students. One was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the other remains in critical condition. The university has withheld the names of the victims for now.

The school is providing support to the victims’ families and offering counseling services for students. In a public statement, Kentucky State University emphasized that they are closely coordinating with affected families.

In a message shared on social media, Governor Andy Beshear commented that the incident seems to be isolated, indicating no ongoing threat to the community. “Violence has no place in our commonwealth or country,” he expressed, urging for prayers for the victims and their families.

President Kofi C. Akakpo described the situation as a “senseless tragedy.” He shared his sorrow over the loss, reflecting on the pain families endure in such circumstances.

In light of the shooting, the university has decided to cancel classes, final exams, and campus activities for the remainder of the week, just as the fall semester was wrapping up. Students are advised they may return home if they choose, with further updates to come soon.
