Netflix’s “Queen of Coal” Gaining Traction Before Release
The upcoming Netflix film, “Queen of Coal,” which tells the story of a transgender coal miner and features a transgender activist, is creating buzz as it approaches its December 19 premiere.
A brief overview of the film describes it as follows: “A trans woman dreams of working in a coal mine, but in a town steeped in superstition and patriarchy, Karita must fight for her place underground.”
The narrative is inspired by the real-life story of Carla Antonella “Carlita” Rodríguez, who was the first transgender female miner in Argentina’s Rio Turbio. Rodríguez herself has spoken about the film’s relevance since its premiere in Spain.
Rodríguez commented on the current difficulties facing Argentina, especially for those in creative fields. “This is a very complicated time… The government is destroying this country from within by defunding public policies. We need to support those who are truly suffering,” she shared in a recent interview.
She also mentioned her work in the mining sector, highlighting that her company is undergoing a transition from public to private ownership under the current administration led by Javier Milei.
In the film, the character of “Kalita” is portrayed by Lux Pascal, a transgender actor and activist. Remarkably, Pascal is the older sibling of well-known actor Pedro Pascal.
However, some critics, particularly from conservative circles, have voiced their disapproval of the film prior to its release. Among the criticisms were remarks suggesting that “Queen of Coal” promotes a narrative of a man pretending to be a woman to confront societal norms, leading some to urge viewers to reconsider their Netflix subscriptions.
Amidst these discussions, the film has sparked broader debates about Netflix’s approach to content, with accusations that the platform is promoting progressive ideologies, particularly concerning content aimed at children.
As the release date nears, Netflix has yet to respond to the growing discussions surrounding the film.
