Unauthorized Immigrant Charged with Shooting 61-Year-Old Man at Grocery Store and Targeting Police Officers

Charges Filed Against Illegal Immigrant for Shooting Incident

An illegal immigrant who arrived in the United States as an unaccompanied minor has been charged in connection with the shooting death of 61-year-old Michael Kasper in a grocery store parking lot in Omaha, Nebraska. The suspect, Juan Ayala Ramos, allegedly shot Kasper randomly while the victim was unloading groceries from his car on December 3.

Authorities from the Department of Homeland Security announced that Ayala Ramos crossed into the U.S. as a minor in June 2007. Following the incident with Kasper, he reportedly fired at responding police officers.

Police reported that, after shooting Kasper, Ayala Ramos fled into a nearby gas station where he barricaded himself in a restroom. Body camera footage shows him firing at officers, who returned fire, ultimately resulting in Ayala Ramos being shot and killed.

DHS Director Tricia McLaughlin expressed her condolences to Kasper and the officers involved, saying, “A violent criminal from El Salvador shot and killed four officers and a 61-year-old man in cold blood on December 3rd in Omaha. Despite several prior arrests, he remained at large in American society.”

Sergeant Emilio Luna and officers Brock Rengo, Jordan Brandt, and Christopher Brown sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the confrontation.

Notably, Ayala Ramos had multiple previous arrests but was never deported. His record includes a 2019 charge for assault by strangulation and a 2021 arrest for robbery and possession of a stolen firearm. In 2007, a federal judge had closed his deportation case.
