Isla Fisher Remembers Sophie Kinsella, Her ‘Hero’

Isla Fisher is reflecting on her admiration for Sophie Kinsella, who sadly passed away at the age of 55.

The actress, known for her role in the film adaptation of Kinsella’s popular book Confessions of a Shopaholic, shared her heartfelt condolences on social media after hearing the news of Kinsella’s death.

“I am so saddened by your loss,” the 49-year-old wrote in her Instagram stories on Wednesday.

Fisher continued to express her feelings in a subsequent post, thanking Kinsella for gifting readers a delightfully flawed character, Rebecca Bloomwood. “Dear Sophie, you conjured up a hilariously flawed dream of a comic book character named Rebecca Bloomwood,” she said. “I was lucky enough to be in her shoes and share some of your witty and wonderful words.”

She mentioned her children, noting, “My daughters grew up reading your books and still love them,” emphasizing the impact Kinsella’s work had on her family.

Wrapping up her emotional tribute, Fisher expressed her gratitude for the “magic” Kinsella brought to the literary world. “My heart is broken. You are still my hero. I am grateful to you,” she concluded, adding that although they would never meet again, Kinsella’s legacy would live on through her memorable characters.

Kinsella, whose real name was Madeline Sophie Wickham, first introduced readers to Rebecca Bloomwood in Confessions of a Shopaholic, published in 2000. This novel led to nine additional titles, each chronicling the humorous life and escapades of the protagonist.

The movie adaptation hit theaters in 2009, featuring Fisher, Hugh Dancy, and Krysten Ritter.

Her family announced her death through social media, sharing their heartbreak: “We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved Sophie (aka Maddie, aka Mum) passed away this morning.” They described her final days, filled with family, music, and joy.

The family noted Kinsella’s battle with an aggressive glioblastoma brain tumor, diagnosed in 2022, remarking on her immense bravery throughout the fight.

Sophie was grateful for her vibrant family and successful writing career. They conveyed their sorrow, stating, “It will be heartbreaking to see her go.”

Kinsella had initially disclosed her health struggles in April 2024 but chose to keep it private for her children’s sake, wanting them to process the news away from the public eye.

In a previous message, she reflected on how isolating a tough diagnosis can feel, emphasizing the importance of support from loved ones. Fisher later added a comforting note, saying, “Sending you lots of love and healing energy.”
