Police Officers Suspended in Tamaulipas for Misconduct
In Tamaulipas, a border state in Mexico, 43 police officers have been suspended after it was discovered that they had transformed a police station into a bar and were allegedly drinking while on duty. This incident raises concerns amid increasing cartel violence in the area, with accusations that state police are not acting against cartel members.
The situation unfolded early in the morning when state police leaders visited a station in Burgos. They found many officers either drinking or already intoxicated inside. Consequently, the officials took immediate action and suspended the involved officers.
Following the discovery, Carlos Arturo Plancaldo Escudero, the public security secretary of Tamaulipas, announced that an investigation was underway. However, he noted that it was still unclear if the officers were actually intoxicated, almost as if trying to downplay the seriousness of the situation. He mentioned that the Home Office is looking into the case and will respond accordingly if any rules or laws were violated.
While local authorities claimed to be shocked by the event, drinking and partying at Burgos police stations isn’t particularly new. Regional Coordinator Irma Martínez Ramirez had previously addressed an officer caught drinking on-site. Shortly after that, she noticed more officers from nearby San Fernando stations doing the same. This inquiry led to protests from the officers, who accused Martínez Ramírez of having connections to organized crime.
Due to the unrest, Martínez Ramírez was placed on leave earlier this month. Just a week later, officials from the Home Affairs inspected the Burgos station.
The police station in Burgos was established in recent years to enhance police presence in rural areas where cartel activities are more common. Yet, in recent months, the state police have frequently avoided engaging directly with cartel gunmen, frustrating many local residents.
