Florida man found guilty of a cold case rape in NYC given a 20-year prison sentence

A man from Florida, Jancies Santiago, has been sentenced for a rape incident that occurred over 20 years ago in Manhattan. On Wednesday, he received a 20-year prison term along with five years of post-release supervision for the crime that had remained unsolved since May 2000.

According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, the case took a long time to resolve. Officials explained that on May 23, 2000, the 27-year-old victim came home to discover Santiago, who was masked, hiding in her closet.

In a terrifying confrontation, Santiago forced her into the bathroom, claimed he had a knife and gun, and made threats against her life. He then bound her arms and legs with wire hangers before sexually assaulting her.

A DNA profile obtained from the survivor’s rape kit eventually led to Santiago being indicted as “John Doe” in 2005 by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

However, it wasn’t until December 2023 that advanced genetic tracking technology identified Santiago as the assailant. Investigators connected him not just to the 2000 case but also to a separate incident in 2001 involving a 21-year-old woman in the Bronx.

This investigation was funded, in part, by a three-year, $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice aimed at resolving cold cases. It was through this funding that evidence from the crime scenes was meticulously examined, leading to Santiago’s conviction.

Santiago, who had been residing in Groveland, Florida, was arrested and extradited back to New York. Just recently, on September 30, he was found guilty of first-degree rape and robbery connected to the Manhattan incident.

Prosecutors specified that in the Bronx case, he is believed to have broken into the apartment of a sleeping 21-year-old woman in December 2001, covering her face, tying her up, and assaulting her as well. Interestingly, her rape kit also produced a DNA profile that matched that of Santiago.

While the 2001 Bronx case is still unsolved, District Attorney Alvin Bragg remarked on Santiago’s sentencing, noting, “After 25 years of evading responsibility, Jancy Santiago has been sentenced to an effective prison term for raping a woman in her home.” He expressed gratitude towards the dedicated investigators and to the survivor who bravely testified despite the passage of years.
