Newsom Critiques Trump as “Destructive”

California Governor Gavin Newsom has characterized President Donald Trump as one of the “most destructive” presidents in recent memory, expressing concerns that the nation might become “unrecognizable.” These statements were made during a podcast with New York Times columnist Ezra Klein.

Newsom did not hold back, stating, “I think Trump is one of the most destructive presidents of my lifetime, and one of the most destructive human beings. This republic is really in danger, and I have no patience for those trying to downplay this.”

He also condemned various institutions—financial, educational, and political—for capitulating to Trump. “I can’t stand crony capitalism,” he added. “It’s troubling that many universities and businesses have aligned themselves with him out of fear of losing funding.” This year, several elite institutions have adjusted their policies due to pressures from the Trump administration.

Newsom, viewed as a potential Democratic candidate for the 2028 presidential race, has consistently criticized Trump throughout his presidency. He mentioned having “softened” concerns about Trump’s potential bid for a third term, despite constitutional barriers. “This guy is reckless,” he remarked. “If we don’t keep pushing back, we risk losing our right to a fair election.” He pointed out his own vulnerabilities, saying, “I have to face my kids, which weighs heavily on me.”

Newsom’s criticisms have included social media posts that mimic Trump’s style, even using all caps and nicknames. He has also employed AI-generated videos to satirize the president, highlighting Trump’s behavior in a humorous light.

The tension between Newsom and Trump appears to be mutual, as Trump has repeatedly criticized the governor. For instance, Trump has blamed Newsom for wildfires in Southern California and has backed threats against him during immigration raids.
