Even with an income of $175K and savings of $3.5M, a 62-year-old lawyer shares his fear of retiring with Dave Ramsey.

Concerns About Retirement Even With Financial Security

Steve, a 62-year-old lawyer from Raleigh, North Carolina, recently shared his thoughts with a personal finance expert. He found himself in a situation that many might consider enviable—no debt, a paid-off home, and $3.5 million saved for retirement. Yet, despite this financial security, he feels unable to retire comfortably.

“What I really want is for someone to tell me it’s okay to quit,” he confessed. Although he has been contemplating retirement, two main worries linger: a potential drop in income and rising health insurance costs.

Steve earns $175,000 annually and has no pension. His savings are tied up in 401(k)s and IRAs. After analyzing his situation, financial guru Dave Ramsey pointed out that by investing in a solid growth stock mutual fund, averaging about 10%, Steve could potentially generate $350,000 each year without touching his principal amount. That, by the way, is double his current salary.

Ramsey assured him that he could feasibly withdraw $200,000 annually and still grow his wealth. He even went as far as to say that it would be “easy” to manage such a transition.

Praising Steve for his persistence and success, Ramsey said, “You started with nothing and became a millionaire. I’m so proud of you. That’s great.” This seemed to touch on the larger theme that, despite its challenges, the American Dream is indeed alive.

Steve acknowledged that while he has steadily built his wealth, there’s an emotional struggle that comes with the retirement decision. “Recent life events have made me realize that what I need to do is… spend time with the people I love,” he reflected, noting that admin tasks are no longer a priority for him.

When asked about his post-retirement plans, Steve expressed a desire to travel and really make the most of his remaining time. Ramsey cautioned against becoming aimless, remarking, “Netflix won’t accept that.” He suggested that Steve could utilize his legal expertise to give back to nonprofits and religious organizations.

Rachel Cruz added another layer to this conversation, emphasizing the importance of recognizing pivotal moments in life. “Whatever caused this change of heart…listen,” she advised.

Ultimately, Ramsey reassured Steve, giving him the thumbs up to retire. “Your financial situation is great. You’ve done an excellent job, so you can retire.”
