West Palm Beach shifts from a vacation destination to a thriving business hub

West Palm Beach Emerges as a Thriving Business Hub

West Palm Beach is transforming. Once just a retreat for retirees and seasonal tourists, it’s now becoming a top choice for businesses across the nation.

Executives highlight the unique lifestyle, favorable tax conditions, and a talented workforce as game-changers for Florida’s economic landscape. With many companies—spanning tech firms, financial institutions, and startups—flocking to the area, there’s a clear invitation to others: “Come and see for yourself. You might be surprised at how easy it is.”

Visium’s CEO, John Rajchart, expressed confidence in the area. “This place is ripe for growth—an exciting lifestyle and an appealing tax structure make it a winner. This isn’t just a short-term play; it’s a long-term strategy,” he noted.

Jordan Rathleff, executive vice president at Related, emphasized certainty in business decisions. “Starting a job or business demands a sense of stability, which South Florida offers. West Palm Beach sits right at the center of that certainty,” he shared.

Florida’s Economic Transformation

According to the Palm Beach County Business Development Commission, over the last five years, more than 140 companies have established themselves in Palm Beach County. This influx has generated 13,110 jobs and exceeded $1.12 billion in investments. Since the last U.S. Census in 2020, West Palm Beach has also seen the highest population growth in the county, with about 10,000 new residents settling in.

Major firms like Citadel, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, and Vanderbilt University have expanded their operations in West Palm Beach. Rathleff’s work, assisting these companies in finding ideal office spaces, is ongoing.

“Florida has made it clear: it’s open for business,” Rathleff said. He pointed out that many financial services firms previously situated in the Northeast are recognizing South Florida as a prime location for expansion, a trend accelerated by the pandemic.

Businesses are drawn to West Palm Beach for a variety of reasons: access to talent, low taxes, a rich lifestyle, and a welcoming business climate.

Rajchart, who relocated Visium from Orlando, remarked, “Our employees are thriving here because of what this city offers. There’s a strong willingness among talented individuals to start fresh in this area.”

Rajchart observed a significant shift in the city’s image—from a leisure destination to a viable career hub. “Attracting and keeping talent is priority number one for companies relocating here,” he stated, noting a demographic shift in West Palm Beach, where the average age has dropped significantly in recent years.

The decision to work with Rathleff for locating new office and lab space has strengthened their collaborative ties instead of just conducting business transactions.

Challenges Ahead

However, rapid growth isn’t without its challenges. Rathleff acknowledged potential hurdles, particularly regarding infrastructure and housing affordability as the city expands. “As cities grow, they inevitably face infrastructure issues. Transportation and housing are often the most pressing concerns,” he said.

Rathleff believes affordable housing is essential so that everyone can live in desirable neighborhoods. “Our region’s future hinges on providing diverse housing options while looking at transportation solutions,” he highlighted.

Business leaders are encouraging other entrepreneurs to consider West Palm Beach, coinciding with a trip planned by economic development agencies from neighboring counties to New York City to attract more businesses to the area.

Rajchart concluded, “From the climate to the culture, it’s a perfect fit for me. I see myself here for years to come.”

Rathleff added that their office has grown immensely since its opening eight years ago, illustrating the area’s appeal. “We’ve built a strong community here. People recognize the significant growth potential.”

“The awareness around what’s happening in this area is clear, and we’re just at the beginning of this remarkable growth journey,” he stated.
