Experts caution that the high sugar levels in hot chocolate may harm your bones.

The holiday season often makes us crave cozy foods and drinks, but this winter, there’s a red flag being raised about one particular favorite: hot chocolate. Experts are cautioning that while it might feel comforting, it could be harmful to your bone health more than you might think.

Orthopedic surgeons have pointed out that the high sugar content in sugary hot cocoa, frequently made with milk, can actually weaken bones. A standard glass of milk provides around 300 milligrams of calcium, which is just a fraction of the 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams that adults should aim for each day. In contrast, most hot cocoa contains between 20 to 60 grams of sugar—this amount can surpass the sugar present in a typical candy bar and even approach or exceed what the American Heart Association recommends for daily intake.

Now, for some, moderate drinking might not be a big deal. But it’s worth noting that recent studies indicate that consuming large meals regularly could interfere with absorbing vital nutrients necessary for strengthening bones, leading potentially to long-term bone loss.

Dr. Jeremy Smith from the Hoag Orthopedic Institute in California mentions that various factors influence bone health, including diet. While milk is calcium-rich, certain foods can also be detrimental. He stated the importance of being mindful of what we consume. On a related note, certified holistic nutritionist Robin DeCicco emphasized that foods high in calcium—like cheese, yogurt, and certain vegetables—are crucial for bone health.

DeCicco highlighted that hot cocoa shouldn’t be looked at as a source of calcium. She suggested that if you’re craving something sweet and warm, you might be better off making your own hot chocolate using healthier ingredients.

A study from 2018 showed that an excess of sugar could increase the likelihood of osteoporosis by causing the body to excrete more calcium and magnesium, which are vital for maintaining strong bones. Experts, including Dr. Pamela Mehta, noted that a long-term diet laden with sugar can certainly negatively impact bone health by hampering the absorption of calcium and triggering inflammation.

Interestingly, while a well-balanced diet low in sugar may not create major issues with occasional hot chocolate indulgence, a diet high in sugar and processed foods is tied to lower bone density, slower recovery from injuries, and deficiencies in essential nutrients. All of these can hasten bone loss over the years.

For those who genuinely can’t live without hot cocoa, Smith suggests crafting it at home with unsweetened cocoa and natural sweeteners. This way, you can enjoy the benefits of calcium and antioxidants without the excessive sugar. DeCicco adds that it’s not about refraining from treats; instead, it’s about making smarter choices.

Furthermore, cocoa carries several health benefits, such as reducing inflammation, supporting heart health, and stabilizing blood sugar levels when prepared with care. It also provides beneficial minerals like magnesium, iron, and potassium. So, while hot chocolate might be a seasonal treat, it’s best enjoyed thoughtfully to ensure it doesn’t come at the cost of your bone health.
