Gavin Newsom’s Warm Reception at DNC Summit

One of the leading figures in the Democratic Party and a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election has made a notable appearance at a prominent Democratic summit.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is speculated to be a contender for the White House, enjoyed a warm welcome during the first day of this year’s Democratic National Committee (DNC) winter conference held in Los Angeles. He interacted with delegates and was treated with a VIP flair.

A DNC member, who preferred to remain anonymous, remarked that Newsom was greeted like a celebrity, being surrounded by party leaders and activists as he made his way to a series of meetings scheduled for the day.

This enthusiastic reception for local governors at the DNC gathering is framed by recent setbacks faced by the party, such as losing control of the White House and the Senate last year, as well as not regaining a majority in the House.

Despite past challenges, Democrats are feeling optimistic following a strong win in the recent 2025 elections and surprisingly positive results in this year’s special elections, partly due to prioritizing affordability issues.

DNC delegates and officials are currently participating in training sessions to reflect on their electoral successes and gear up for the crucial midterm elections next year.

DNC Chairman Ken Martin emphasized unity and focus as they approach the midterm elections, stating they are prepared to advocate for lower costs for working families.

In addition, a significant motivator for Democrats is their staunch opposition to the policies of President Donald Trump, especially as they search for a candidate who may reclaim the presidency in 2028.

With less than a year before the unofficial start of the presidential campaign, attention is shifting towards 2028 during this DNC meeting.

Newsom’s visibility in the party has markedly increased, thanks in part to a vocal backlash against Trump, which has included noteworthy social media confrontations and a successful campaign in California against Republican redistricting.

Veteran Democratic strategist Joe Caiazzo commented on Newsom’s ability to confront Trump assertively while maintaining core democratic values, a quality that has garnered him considerable attention.

Lucas Meyer, former president of the New Hampshire Young Democrats, observed that Newsom’s quick, engaging, and often humorous demeanor stands out in today’s fast-paced media landscape, contrasting him with more cautious Democrats.

When asked about a potential presidential run after the 2026 midterms, Newsom candidly responded, “Yes, if you don’t, you’re lying.”

On Thursday, Newsom held meetings with Democratic Party chairs from New Hampshire and Nevada, both crucial early voting states.

Ray Buckley, the New Hampshire Democratic Party chairman, shared that they had fruitful discussions covering various topics.

Even though Newsom’s popularity is on the rise, some progressives within the party remain skeptical about his alignment with their ideals.

Democratic strategist Michael Ceraso remarked that while many see Newsom as a strong candidate against Trump, they question whether his current activities will truly aid him in the 2028 primaries.

Concerns have also been raised by moderate Democrats that a nomination for Newsom could leave him vulnerable to Republican attacks based on his record in California.

As Newsom eyes a potential candidacy, he isn’t alone; numerous other candidates are also positioning themselves for 2028.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker was among those present at the DNC meeting and mentioned he couldn’t dismiss the possibility of running for the presidency.

Pritzker reportedly raised over $1 million for the DNC at a fundraiser, where several notable figures, including Conan O’Brien, also participated.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris is another key presence at the winter meetings. Although she stepped back from her gubernatorial bid in California, she has indicated she may still seek the presidency in 2028, stating she has “not done yet.”

The DNC committee members observed these prominent figures as they begin to set the stage for a successful campaign for the 2026 midterm elections while simultaneously starting to consider strategies for 2028.

While names like Harris, Newsom, and Pritzker are certainly prominent, there exists a host of other potential candidates, including governors and senators who are actively engaging with voters in early states.

Democrats are aiming to reclaim majorities in Congress during the 2026 midterms, and next year is likely to see increased campaigning among those looking toward the 2028 election.

Some party members are optimistic about the competitiveness of the upcoming presidential primary, considering it an opportunity for the party.
