Trump to Honor 1980 Olympic Hockey Team
President Donald Trump is set to welcome members of the U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team known for their “Miracle on Ice,” a remarkable underdog story where they defeated the Soviet Union national team during the 1980 Olympics amid the Cold War.
The team will attend a ceremony on Friday where Trump will sign a bill awarding them the Congressional Medal in recognition of their historic victory.
The signing event, scheduled for 3 p.m. in the Oval Office, will include prominent hockey players from the gold medal team, such as captain Mike Eruzione, goaltender Jim Craig, and forward Buzz Schneider. Additionally, the family of the late coach Herb Brooks will be present, including his widow and children.
This legislation honors all athletes on the anniversary of the United States’ win in the 1980 Winter Olympics, having successfully passed through both the House and Senate in September.
The hockey game continues to be celebrated across social media, and the team’s incredible journey was portrayed in a Disney film. Kurt Russell starred as legendary coach Herb Brooks in Miracle.
Moreover, ten additional players are expected to join the event, including defenseman Jack O’Callaghan, backup goaltender Steve Janaszak, and forward Rob McClanahan.
White House Press Secretary Taylor Rogers released a statement saying, “President Trump honors the legendary Olympic men’s ice hockey team for its historic and symbolic victory over the Soviet Union in the ‘Miracle on Ice.’ This victory sparked a resurgence of national pride as Americans watched Team USA take home an unexpected gold medal.”
The memorable game took place at the Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York, featuring an American squad made up of amateur college players who faced a Soviet team of seasoned state-sponsored athletes. The U.S. team made a comeback to win 4-3, which led to broadcaster Al Michaels’ famous line, “Do you believe in miracles? Yes!”
Just two days later, the American team went on to compete against Finland for the gold medal.
