Melissa Joan Hart's daring Maxim cover almost cost her the 'Sabrina' contract

Melissa Joan Hart nearly lost a significant role due to a cover shoot for Maxim magazine. Known for her roles in popular ’90s sitcoms like “Clarissa Explains It All” and “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” she ventured into a more adult-themed photoshoot in 1999. This choice jeopardized her contract for “Sabrina.”

During an episode of the Betches podcast, she recounted some troubling experiences from that time, including a moment when she was informed she had been fired from “Scary Movie” shortly after her family’s presence at the “Drive Me Crazy” premiere. Hart had received a call claiming that her appearance on the Maxim cover had dire consequences.

Specifically, a lawyer approached her at the premiere and stated she was fired from “Sabrina” because of the cover. This revelation prompted her to burst into tears, marking what she described as a particularly dramatic night.

Despite these challenges, Hart managed to remain on “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.” The initial concern was that her contract stipulated Sabrina could never appear in any suggestive way, and the magazine had indeed referred to her character on the cover. Ultimately, the issue was resolved, as it became clear that Hart had no influence over Maxim’s use of the character’s name, allowing her to continue with the show until its conclusion in 2003.

Looking back in 2023, Hart shared with FOX News Digital that, despite the troubles caused by the shoot, she holds no regrets. She reflected, “Everything… seems a little further away in the rearview mirror.” What felt overwhelming at the time turned out to generate positive buzz for the movie she was promoting, making the experience somewhat beneficial in hindsight.
