House Democrats raise worries about Jasmine Crockett's campaign for the Texas Senate

Concerns Arise for Jasmine Crockett’s Senate Bid

Texas Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s recent Senate candidacy has sparked some worries among House Democrats, according to a report from Axios. One anonymous House Democrat expressed doubts about her viability in the general election, saying, “She might win the primary, but she can’t win the Texas general.” This sentiment reflects a level of skepticism about Crockett’s chances.

Last week, Crockett launched her campaign with a video that featured voiceovers of President Donald Trump’s critiques aimed at progressive senators. Another House Democrat voiced concerns to Axios, stating, “That’s a matter of concern… I think this is a bad decision.” The apprehension among some party members is palpable.

Crockett responded to these critiques with her own statement, insisting that she seeks to connect with a broad range of Texans. “It’s hard to see clearly who the Texans are through the fog in Washington,” she remarked, emphasizing her focus on engaging with people who often feel overlooked by conventional politics. She seeks to build trust across the state’s diverse population.

On the Republican side, the Texas Senate race features incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, along with challengers like state Attorney General Ken Paxton and U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt. In the Democratic primary, Crockett will be up against state Rep. James Talarico.

Another House Democrat articulated similar worries about Crockett’s potential for success, highlighting fears that she may struggle against opponents like Paxton. “There’s a lot of concern that she won’t win, especially with Paxton, who seems like an easy target,” said the congressman. Nonetheless, some of her colleagues, including Rep. Becca Balint from Vermont, have praised Crockett as a skilled communicator.

Rep. Al Green from Texas feels optimistic about Crockett’s chances, stating, “I believe she can win.” Balint added, “Crockett was an extremely gifted messenger who touched millions of Americans across the country.” While Crockett has acknowledged the political landscape, she asserts that her campaign isn’t designed to sway Trump supporters. “Well, I don’t know necessarily that we’re going to convert all Trump supporters. That’s not our goal,” she remarked, insisting that her focus is on reaching those who might typically disengage from politics.
