Pete Alonso’s Move to Baltimore: A Positive Shift

Mets fans might still be reeling from Pete Alonso’s recent switch to the Orioles, signing a five-year contract worth $155 million. Buck Showalter, who has experience with both Alonso and the Baltimore team, expresses confidence that Alonso will thrive in this new environment.

“It’s a good fit for Pete. Really, it is. He’s going to fit right in with Baltimore, and the fans will love him,” Showalter noted during a phone conversation. “If I had to choose a different place for him besides Queens, Baltimore would definitely be at the top of my list.”

Having managed Alonso during the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Mets and spent nine years with the Orioles, Showalter thinks the new vibe in Baltimore will benefit Alonso significantly.

“The fans there aren’t aggressive; they just genuinely want to support the Orioles and cheer for a strong team. They’re really excited,” he remarked.

Alonso appears to have taken to his new role comfortably. At his introductory press conference last week, he described it as a “perfect fit.”

Showalter characterized Alonso as “an honest person.” He added, “He stays consistent every day and brings his best. If you’re looking for someone trustworthy for a deal like this, Pete’s definitely among the best options.”

As Alonso embarks on this new chapter, Showalter shared a piece of advice: “I’m happy for him. Just don’t overextend yourself trying to please everyone. He’s naturally likable. I’d say keep it simple: play first base and just be Pete.”

The Mets, who had re-signed Alonso last offseason with a two-year, $54 million deal that included an opt-out option, opted not to extend a new offer after seeing the size of his recent contract.

In light of Alonso’s departure, along with closer Edwin Diaz going to the Dodgers in free agency, the Mets have signed Jorge Polanco to a two-year, $40 million contract, positioning him to play first base, designated hitter, and other infield roles.

The team also traded Brandon Nimmo to Texas in exchange for Marcus Semien, and they are reportedly considering a trade for Mason Miller from San Diego, according to Jon Heyman.
