Death Toll Rises from Sydney Hanukkah Attack

According to New South Wales Police, the number of fatalities from the recent terrorist attack at a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney’s Bondi Beach has increased to 16. Additionally, 42 others were hospitalized or received treatment, with two succumbing to their injuries. Among the deceased were a 10-year-old girl and an 87-year-old man.

Currently, five individuals are in critical condition, including four police officers who were also shot during the attack.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon has identified the suspected gunmen as a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, who is now in police custody with serious injuries. The father died at the scene.

As of now, police have withheld details regarding the suspects’ ethnicity or nationality, and there’s no comment on the possible motive behind the attack.

“We’re still in the early phases of the investigation and aim to provide accurate information,” Lanyon remarked. “It’s important that our investigators eliminate speculation and conduct a thorough inquiry.” He emphasized the significance of an accurate portrayal of events, as there has been a lot of information circulating.

Interestingly, the 50-year-old suspect had a legal firearm license for approximately ten years, despite Australia’s stringent controls over gun ownership. Also, it appears that the 24-year-old suspect was known to the police, though there were no indications he had been planning any violent actions.

Authorities have conducted a raid at a residence linked to the suspects in Campsie, with uncertainty surrounding how long they had been staying there, suspected to be an Airbnb rental.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese labeled the attack on the Bondi Beach Hanukkah event as an “act of pure evil,” stating that it was a deliberate assault on the Jewish community.

However, Albanese has faced backlash for his reluctance to link the attack to Islamic extremism.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett remarked, “We all know what it is. The Jewish community is under attack.”

Current Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has criticized Albanese for allegedly encouraging anti-Semitism in Australia by supporting Palestinian statehood.

On the international front, US President Donald Trump condemned the incident as an “anti-Semitic attack,” urging American Jews to embrace their identity and celebrate during Hanukkah.
