Singer Trey Songz was taken into custody on assault charges earlier this month after reportedly hitting a nightclub staff member in New York.
On December 6, he and his friends were celebrating at Drama Nightclub in Times Square when they allegedly got “unnecessarily enraged” after being informed the club would close around 4 a.m., according to prosecutors in Manhattan criminal court.
The 41-year-old allegedly struck the employee in the face, resulting in “swelling and significant pain.”
Songz appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court on Sunday, facing charges of two counts of second-degree criminal mischief and third-degree assault.
The employee has been granted an order of protection against Songz, who was known to frequent the nightclub.
The artist, whose real name is Tremaine Neverson, exited the courtroom with his hood up, covering his face, and chose not to comment on the situation.
He was released under supervision, scheduled to return to court on February 18. A judge expressed concerns that his past legal issues posed a danger.
A representative for Songz did not provide a comment when contacted.
In 2016, the “Na Na” hitmaker faced charges of assault after throwing a microphone and speakers during a Detroit concert.
He later accepted a plea deal on two counts of disturbing the peace, resulting in 18 months of probation.
Additionally, in 2018, a woman accused Songz of punching her at an NBA All-Star event, which led her to obtain a restraining order against him.
That same month, he was arrested on suspicion of grievous assault, but those charges were dropped.
In January 2021, he was arrested again following a violent altercation with police at a Kansas City Chiefs game, which was captured on video.
Post-release, he jokingly referenced the incident on social media while aboard a private jet, asking if the “Chiefs game is on, right?!”
Later that year, former basketball player Dylan Gonzalez accused him of rape, sparking a sexual assault investigation. He denied these allegations and was cleared of all charges by April 2022 due to insufficient evidence.
In February 2022, he faced another sexual assault allegation in a $20 million lawsuit that included claims of “brutal” rape, which resulted in a confidential settlement in September.
Most recently, a woman filed a lawsuit against him, claiming he sexually assaulted her during an incident in 2013, stating that he “ripped her swimsuit top” and groped her. This case is still ongoing, as his legal team is working to dismiss the suit.
