USC Coach Comments on Brown University Shooting
Lindsey Gottlieb, the head coach of the USC Trojans women’s basketball team, expressed her concerns about gun violence following a tragic shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island over the weekend.
In the incident, which remains under investigation, a gunman, whose identity hasn’t been disclosed yet, carried out an attack in Providence, resulting in two fatalities and injuries to nine others. Authorities did detain a person of interest, but that individual has since been released.
During her postgame press conference, following a 79-51 loss to the University Huskies, Gottlieb, an alumna of Brown, opened the discussion with her reactions to the shooting. “It doesn’t have to be this way,” she stated. “My thoughts and prayers are with my teammates who have children there. It’s deeply concerning for parents who have to worry about their kids.” She added that in their current situation, the country is sadly unique.
Gottlieb continued, pointing out the distressing state of affairs, remarking, “We’re the only nation that faces this kind of threat. Parents here shouldn’t have to live in fear. My teammate has a daughter who’s in a library basement, not knowing what’s happening. She’s set to fly there tomorrow.” It was clear she felt a strong need to address the issue.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with the Providence Police confirming there have been no specific threats against the local community since the initial emergency call.
Gottlieb has been leading the USC women’s basketball program since the 2021-22 season, boasting a record of 100 wins and 39 losses. Before joining USC, she coached at both the University of California, Santa Barbara and the University of California.
