Investigation Continues into Brown University Shooting
On Sunday, authorities began releasing individuals arrested in connection with the mass shooting that occurred at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, marking a third day of investigation.
Officials indicated that a suspect has been identified following a shooting that took place in the engineering building during final exams on Saturday. The tragic incident left two students dead and nine others injured. The FBI has been collaborating with local police to pursue leads, with FBI Director Kash Patel confirming the first person of interest was apprehended in Coventry. Patel expressed gratitude for the efforts of the FBI and partner agencies.
As details continued to emerge, Rhode Island’s Democratic Attorney General Peter Neronha stated there was initial evidence suggesting the first suspect might be relevant. However, he noted that the evidence had shifted in a different direction over the past day.
Neronha also highlighted a surveillance video showing a person dressed in black who’s still being sought. He clarified that this individual is a person of interest—not necessarily a suspect.
“There are still many unknowns in this case,” he remarked.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley acknowledged that more evidence needs to be gathered. When questioned about the whereabouts of the suspected shooter, he admitted, “Honestly, we have no way of knowing,” emphasizing that the investigation is very much ongoing and that they are pursuing new leads.
By Monday morning, one of the victims had been discharged from the hospital, while another remained in critical condition. Among those who died was identified as Ella Cook, a 19-year-old and Republican Vice President of Brown University.
In a statement addressing the recent misarrests, Patel commended the FBI’s investigative work. He detailed the establishment of a command post for collecting and analyzing information, the activation of the Cellular Analysis Investigation Team, and the deployment of resources to reconstruct the scene of the shooting. He assured that the FBI is committed to pursuing justice continuously.
