Trump Files $10 Billion Lawsuit Against BBC

President Donald Trump has initiated a hefty $10 billion lawsuit against the BBC regarding its documentary “Panorama,” claiming that it misrepresented his statements from January 6. The suit was filed on Monday in the Southern District of Florida, focusing on defamation and violations of the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act. Trump is seeking $5 billion for each of the two claims.

This lawsuit names both the BBC and BBC Studio Productions as defendants. A spokesperson for Trump’s legal team stated, “The once-respected BBC has defamed President Trump through a deliberate and malicious alteration of his speech, which aims to impact the 2024 presidential election.” They added that the BBC has a pattern of misleading viewers regarding Trump, similar to lawsuits he has filed against other major news outlets.

Represented by attorneys Alejandro Brito, Edward Palczyk, and Daniel Epstein, Trump is reacting to intense criticism of the BBC’s January 6 documentary. Critics contended that the documentary misleadingly depicted events, omitting Trump’s calls for peaceful protests from his speech prior to the Capitol riot.

Although the BBC apologized for editing errors and removed the program from its platform, they firmly disagreed with the defamation claims, stating, “The BBC regrets the editing, but we believe the defamation claim lacks grounds.”

The controversy escalated following a report from the Telegraph, which highlighted a whistleblower’s revelations about the documentary. According to this insider, the BBC manipulated Trump’s comments during a rally held on January 6, 2021. Key phrases urging his supporters to protest “peacefully” were left out, and two comments made an hour apart were combined to give a false implication of incitement to violence.

The documentary features Trump asserting, “I’m going to walk to the Capitol, and I’m going to be with you, and we’re going to fight like hell.” But his actual words also included encouragement to show support for politicians at the Capitol, illustrating a more nuanced message.

The BBC has described this episode as a significant crisis in its storied history, leading to the resignations of key executives. This lawsuit adds to Trump’s pattern of legal actions against the media; previously, he received settlements from various outlets including ABC News and Paramount.

As this is an ongoing story, updates are likely to follow.
