Jasmine Crockett Clarifies Her Remarks About ‘Picking Cotton’

Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett’s Senate Run: A Double-Edged Sword

Democratic Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett is gearing up for her Senate campaign, but it seems her own words might pose the biggest challenge.

In an April speech, she asserted the essential role of immigrants in the U.S., saying, “I had to go around the country and educate people about what immigrants do for this country… The truth is, right now, none of you are going to farm.”

She engaged the audience, asking, “Okay, so am I lying?” as they laughed nervously. “You’re not. You’re not. We’re done picking cotton. We are.” Her statements suggest that the Democratic Party is bringing in undocumented workers to harvest crops, implying that this is a beneficial move.

Perhaps I’m being a bit too blunt, but it’s worth noting that by 2023, Hispanics became the largest demographic group in Texas, overtaking whites, as referenced by the Texas Tribune. A Spanish-language attack ad showcasing Crockett with a whip has already appeared online. (Related: How Republicans got Jasmine Crockett to run for Senate)

Crockett has since responded to her earlier comments in a series of statements. In a message, she reportedly expressed, “My point then and now is to emphasize the shared struggles of black and brown communities.”

“Let me state the obvious: John Cornyn, Ken Paxton, and their Republican Party have established a record of harmful policies towards the Latino community. However, I intend to stand up against these policies… While Republicans divide us by labeling Latinos ‘rapists’ and ‘criminals’ from ‘shithole countries,’ I will advocate for the people of Texas.” She stressed that they seek to uphold their dignity, security, and economic freedoms daily, not just during election seasons.

Crockett’s tone certainly shifts in these statements. It’s probably tempting to think she, or someone on her team, used AI to draft that response, perhaps adding a few typos for good measure.

A recent poll from Texas Southern University indicates Crockett is ahead of state Rep. James Talarico by 8 points. The survey conducted between December 9th and 11th among 1,600 likely Democratic primary voters revealed that she garnered support from 89% of black voters. However, the Texas Tribune notes that Talarico enjoys much better approval ratings among white and Hispanic voters. If Donald Trump’s standing among Hispanic voters is any guide, vague notions of “dignity” may not be enough to sway them.
