Fetterman Comments on Military Actions Against Drug Traffickers
Senator John Fetterman, representing Pennsylvania, shared his thoughts after a private briefing on Tuesday, expressing that he believes military strikes carried out by President Donald Trump’s administration are aimed at legitimate drug-trafficking vessels.
The military has initiated operations against drug boats since September, resulting in the deaths of at least 95 suspected traffickers. During an appearance on “CUOMO,” host Chris Cuomo asked Fetterman about insights from the briefing. He noted that it was clarified the United States has no plans for prolonged military activities around Venezuela.
“I found the media portrayal quite misleading,” Fetterman told Cuomo. “It’s not accurate to say the military is randomly targeting ships. We have detailed intelligence on who is aboard these vessels and what they carry.”
He continued, “Often, there’s reluctance to engage without full certainty. But when they do launch these targeted attacks, they know exactly who and what they are dealing with. It’s simply not true that they’re shooting at random boats.”
For some time, President Trump has been vague about the administration’s objectives in Venezuela, especially as military forces are bolstered in the Caribbean.
Senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina mentioned that during a briefing, he inquired about the administration’s goals regarding Venezuela. “I understand this is an anti-drug initiative. I hope that’s the case,” Graham remarked. He emphasized that it’s critical we address the situation with Nicolás Maduro, expressing dissatisfaction with the lack of clarity about future actions.
Additionally, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles reportedly stated in November that Trump plans to keep targeting boats until Maduro feels the pressure, according to Vanity Fair.
Graham defended the legality of the drug ship operations, and noted that Trump had labeled Maduro as an illegitimate leader. There have been suggestions that a ground invasion or regime change could be on the table.
However, Senator Markwayne Mullin from Oklahoma disagreed, asserting that the primary goal of the operations is to combat drug trafficking, not to change the regime.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated that the administration is focused on dismantling drug cartel networks harming American communities. Yet, no definite evidence has been provided to confirm that the vessels involved are engaged in drug trafficking.
