Zelenskyy to Meet Trump Amid Peace Talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced plans to meet with President Donald Trump this Sunday, with security issues for Ukraine likely on the agenda. Zelenskyy mentioned that Rustem Umerov has been in touch with U.S. representatives about recent developments, emphasizing that time is of the essence. “Many things will be decided by the new year,” he noted.
He also confirmed the meeting in a WhatsApp message to Ukrainian journalists, adding that it’s still uncertain “whether the territorial issue will be discussed.” This comes as speculation grows over the possibility of a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia.
Zelenskyy expressed optimism, referring to a “very good” conversation about potential resolutions during the upcoming meeting. Interestingly, Trump, who has previously stated he would only meet with Zelenskyy or Russian President Vladimir Putin if a deal was imminent, seems to indicate progress is being made. He recently tweeted about significant advancements in peace negotiations, hoping to convene with both leaders soon.
In related news, Zelenskyy noted he had an “extremely positive” discussion with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, suggesting that discussions are moving in a favorable direction. Furthermore, he indicated adjustments had been made in advance of the meeting in Florida, stressing that Ukraine remains determined not to be an obstacle to peace.
He also mentioned that the U.S. and Ukraine are close to finalizing security and economic frameworks that could set the stage for a peace agreement, with a streamlined 20-point plan taking shape from a previous 28-point proposal.
Interestingly, just a day before this announcement, Zelenskyy had voiced positivity after discussions with Jared Kushner and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff about ongoing efforts to achieve lasting peace. Despite ongoing conflicts, including a recent missile attack by Russia, Zelenskyy remains hopeful about future discussions.
As for comments from the Kremlin, envoy Kirill Dmitriev remarked that talks with Ukraine have been constructive, despite the violence that has accompanied the conflict over the years.
The White House has not yet provided any feedback on this developing situation.
