Family Grieves for 'Loving' Grandfather Who Died in 'Unexpected Incident' at Nebraska McDonald's Drive-Thru

Tragic Accident at McDonald’s Drive-Thru in Grand Island

A grandfather was fatally injured Tuesday at a drive-thru in Grand Island, Nebraska, in what officials are calling a “freak accident.”

The event took place around 10:30 a.m. outside the McDonald’s, where 69-year-old Michael Dickinson was discovered trapped between his vehicle and the window, according to reports from KNSB.

Police Chief Dean Elliott noted that it appeared Dickinson had opened his door to reach out and pay. However, it remains unclear whether the car tipped forward or what precisely transpired, but he became stuck between the door frame and the drive-thru counter.

Elliott emphasized that this incident was “100 percent a freak accident.”

Authorities confirmed that Dickinson was the sole person in the car. He was transported to a local emergency room, where he was pronounced dead, as stated by the Grand Island Police Department. The investigation is still pending.

Interestingly, a McDonald’s employee attempted to assist Dickinson by climbing onto the passenger side and jumping out, but that individual suffered injuries and was also taken to the hospital, though expected to recover.

The Grand Island Police Department’s Incident Reconstruction Team helped with the investigation and cleared the scene by 12:35 p.m.

As of Friday afternoon, a GoFundMe page was set up to help raise money for Dickinson’s funeral, garnering $1,740. The page described him as a devoted family man who cared deeply for those in his life, showing his love through actions and always being there for others. He also had a special bond with his dogs, who brought him much joy.

Michael was known as a skilled mechanic, taking great pride in his work and being adept at fixing things. This ability reflected his reliable and practical personality.

Though his life was tragically cut short, his family and friends remember him for his love, loyalty, and kindness. His absence will be profoundly felt.

Reports indicate that Dickinson, a grandfather, had undergone a leg amputation years earlier but had learned to walk again with the help of a prosthetic leg, as shared by his daughter.
