Controversy Surrounds Minnesota Daycare Center

The House’s third-ranking leader from Minnesota has called for explanations from Governor Tim Walz after a troubling incident involving a daycare center that allegedly received $4 million in state funding. The center’s sign was misspelled, and there appeared to be no outdoor activities taking place.

This video sparked significant attention this week, especially amidst ongoing scandals related to the Walz administration, particularly regarding more than $1 billion in alleged losses from social welfare fraud that disproportionately involve the Somali community in the Twin Cities.

Some of these funds, reportedly, have ended up in the hands of the terrorist group al-Shabab.

Republican House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, representing the suburbs of the Twin Cities and St. Cloud, criticized the governor for the situation. He expressed his dismay on social media, questioning how “four million dollars of our hard-earned tax dollars” could go to educational centers unable to function properly.

Recently, the Quality Learning Center received attention for amassing 95 violations from the National Welfare Department between 2019 and 2023. These violations reportedly included failing to secure hazardous materials and lacking proper records for numerous children.

Documents show the center’s license remains valid until the end of 2026. This week, YouTuber Nick Shirley and a companion visited a building on Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis labeled as the Quality Learning Center and noted that the word “Learning” was misspelled on its sign. Almost at once, a woman shouted, “Don’t open it, it’s ICE,” seemingly addressing everyone inside the building.

Shirley engaged with the woman, identifying himself as an online commentator, which prompted her to further insist they leave. The man accompanying Shirley displayed a paper indicating that $1.9 million was allocated to the center in the fiscal year 2025, bringing the reported total funding to $4 million.

“Get out. You are not welcome here. Shame on you,” the woman told them, and it’s uncertain if she had any connection to the daycare.

Shirley raised concerns about the legitimacy of the funding, questioning how a facility that struggles with basic spelling could receive such financial support. He pointed out that the center, which claims to accommodate 99 children according to Minnesota Department of Human Services documents, appeared empty during their visit.

Describing it as a “classic example of the multi-billion dollar fraud” happening in Minnesota, Shirley noted that this was just one among many questionable daycare centers benefiting from government funding.

Commentator Greg Price shared the video, highlighting how if individuals approach a daycare receiving substantial taxpayer dollars, they might be accused of being immigration agents.

U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson indicated that the ongoing fraud investigation could reveal losses exceeding $1 billion related to the program. The Treasury Department is also involved, with Secretary Scott Bessent making public comments regarding the situation.

While the most prominent recipient has been the child nutrition initiative Feeding Our Future, various other recipients of CCAP funding are currently under investigation.

Attempts to contact the daycare center via phone yielded an automated message indicating the call could not be completed as dialed.
