World Juniors: Team USA's Cole Hutson taken off the ice on a stretcher

Injury Update on Cole Hutson During World Junior Championship

During the World Junior Championship match against Switzerland on Saturday night, Team USA defenseman Cole Hutson experienced a significant injury. In the second period, a puck struck him in the back of the head, leading to his being removed from the ice on a stretcher. Thankfully, Team USA later confirmed that Hutson had been discharged from the hospital and was recovering well.

Following the incident, Hutson rejoined the team, reportedly living a “normal” life. The team expressed gratitude for the concern shown and for the care he received. U.S. national team head coach Bob Motzko discussed the situation after the game, acknowledging the tense atmosphere: “It was a scary situation, no question. The building went silent,” he said, emphasizing the close bond within the team. The silver lining was, of course, Hutson’s discharge and return to the group.

Hutson, who plays for Boston College, was a second-round pick by the Washington Capitals in the 2024 NHL Draft. He’s one of four players from his college representing the United States at this championship. In the preliminary round against Switzerland, the U.S. team managed a 2-1 victory, thanks to goals from Brodie Ziemer and Will Zellers, while Basile Sansonen scored Switzerland’s lone goal.

Looking ahead, the United States is set to face Slovakia on Monday, while Switzerland will play Germany on Tuesday. The excitement continues, even with the recent scare.
