Minnesota Fraud Case a Major Focus for the FBI

FBI Director Kash Patel has confirmed an active investigation into a child care facility in Minnesota, which is part of a broader, ongoing fraud inquiry that is a major focus for the bureau.

Recently, a video gained attention where YouTube journalist Nick Shirley challenged employees at a Minnesota learning center, which reportedly received substantial federal aid even though there were no indicators of it being operational.

Patel mentioned on X that the FBI is looking into the matter, stating, “The FBI is aware of recent social media reporting in Minnesota. Prior to the online discussions, we were already ramping up our personnel and investigative efforts to address a large fraud scheme that exploited federal programs. Fraud that robs taxpayers and harms vulnerable children remains a top priority for the FBI both in Minnesota and nationwide.”

He went on to highlight that the FBI had previously dismantled a fraud operation totaling $250 million that misappropriated federal food assistance intended for at-risk children during the pandemic.

“The investigation revealed fictitious vendors, fake companies, and extensive money laundering linked to the Feeding Our Future network,” he added. “This case resulted in 78 indictments and 57 convictions. Among those charged are Abdiwahab Ahmed Mohamud and others, all facing various serious charges.”

Patel remarked that these activities are merely “the tip of a very large iceberg.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson also disclosed recently that since 2018, about half of the $18 billion in federal welfare funds allocated to 14 programs in Minnesota has been lost to fraudulent activities.

He noted, “Minnesota has become a hotspot for scams, almost developing a tourism industry centered around scamming. People are coming to this state specifically to exploit these programs.” This unsettling trend, Thompson insists, is something all Minnesotans should be aware of.
