William Regal’s Warning on Wrestling Safety
Pro wrestling icon William Regal has called on wrestlers to prioritize safety amid some alarming incidents in the ring.
Regal shared an extensive message on social media, highlighting a broken bone he suffered after a severe impact during a match. His career has spanned significant promotions including World Championship Wrestling (WCW), WWE, and All Elite Wrestling (AEW).
In his post, he reflected on his experiences, mentioning past injuries from wrestling and a car accident that he had kept to himself. “I was taught how to land properly to minimize the impact,” he wrote. “But it seems like many nowadays neglect to learn these essential skills.”
He expressed concern over the current wrestling landscape, citing the tragic death of wrestler Mitsuharu Misawa as a moment that should have prompted a shift in attitudes toward safety. Instead, he feels things have only deteriorated. He added that the long-term physical consequences are serious, and injuries are more common than fans might realize.
Regal noted two particularly unsettling incidents that happened recently. At AEW’s Full Gear event, a wrestler named Kyle Fletcher took a dangerous fall after a suplex. Similarly, during WWE’s Survivor Series: War Games, Bron Breaker was flipped onto his head in a high-risk move.
Regal went on to stress that fame or money isn’t worth the physical toll these risky maneuvers can take. “Many people, including fans, don’t always know the risks associated with various moves, and that’s troubling,” he warned. “At 57, I find myself less relevant every day, but I hope some will heed my advice.”
He concluded with a stark reminder: if you’re considering a life in wrestling, you should think twice; it may not be as glamorous as it seems, especially with the potential for catastrophic injuries.
Despite advancements in safety, significant injuries still plague professional wrestling, underscoring the importance of caution and education in the sport.
