Bank of Hawaii Recognized Among America’s Top Regional Banks and Credit Unions

Bank of Hawaii has received a prestigious five-star rating from Newsweek magazine in its 2026 round-up of America’s Best Regional Banks and Credit Unions.

This recognition highlights institutions that are truly making a positive impact in their communities.

“We feel honored by this recognition from Newsweek, as it reflects the strong relationships we’ve nurtured with families and businesses here in Hawaii and the Western Pacific,” commented Peter Ho, Chairman and CEO of Bank of Hawaii. “It’s gratifying to know how much our customers trust us, and we’re thankful that we can support them for many years to come.”

The ranking stems from a comprehensive study that surveyed more than 140,000 individuals. Newsweek evaluated over 66,000 U.S. customers across various categories, including customer service, benefits, fees, and interest rates.

In addition, the research included insights from over 2.3 million social media reviews and upwards of 8 million app store reviews from platforms like Apple and Google Play.

Dave Erdman has been named the interim president and CEO of Hawaii Retail Merchants, effective January 2026.

“We’re confident in Dave’s extensive experience and commitment. [Retail Merchants of Hawaii] is looking to provide stable leadership during this crucial period,” said Darcy Lindamood, chair of the Board, about Erdman’s new role.

Well-regarded as an innovator in the industry, Erdman previously founded and led PacRim Marketing Group/Vector USA and PRTech. His focus was on strategic media communications, public relations, digital marketing, and business development, while also contributing to various community organizations.

“Now, more than ever, it’s crucial for Hawaii’s retail and tourism sectors to have a strong, unified organization,” Erdman stated. “I’m eager to collaborate with the Board, our members, and community leaders to advance our shared mission.”

New Cultural Tourism Framework Announced by Hawaiian Council and Ko Olina

The Hawaiian Council, the largest Native Hawaiian-led organization focused on cultural and community development, has revealed a cultural framework designed with Ko Olina to promote a new tourism model for the islands.

“As Native Hawaiians, our culture encompasses the stories and responsibilities tied to our home,” said Kuhio Lewis, CEO of the Hawaiian Council, regarding the framework. “Our initiative at Ko Olina goes beyond simple programs; it’s about creating a foundation that honors our heritage and ensures that Hawaii’s narratives are voiced by our people.”

This framework integrates cultural, hospitality, and community interests into the fabric of Ko Olina, ensuring its long-term vision aligns with Native Hawaiian leadership and stewardship. It aims to foster a sense of belonging for both visitors and residents.

A key highlight of this framework is Pico at Ko Olina, an 18-acre cultural preserve situated near the Lanikuhonua Royal Estate in Kapolei, Oahu, which aims to serve as a gathering space for the community.

As the Paradise Cove Luau is set to close in December, Ko Olina, along with its resort partners, is supporting a new cultural performance residency orchestrated by the Hawaiian Council, with two major productions scheduled for 2026.

There’s a broader effort to develop a culturally centered resort that benefits both residents and tourists, including workforce programs to help locals pursue careers in hospitality and arts.
