Eastern US prepares for a deep cold spell following last week's record high temperatures

Record Heat Quickly Replaced by Winter Chill

Unusually warm temperatures in parts of the United States vanished swiftly, making way for winter cold just in time for the new year.

On Sunday, some regions experienced their hottest December day, with St. Louis, Missouri, reaching a remarkable 78 degrees, marking a record for the month. Yet, within hours, temperatures plummeted significantly.

As many Americans prepare for a blast of arctic air, a strong cold front is sweeping through much of the eastern U.S., causing temperatures to fall by as much as 30 degrees in certain areas.

The National Weather Service forecasts that frigid air will begin to move into the Northeast starting Monday and will linger into Tuesday.

Places like Syracuse, New York, are under winter storm warnings until New Year’s Eve.

By Tuesday morning, around 240 million people will face below-average temperatures across the country.

In cities such as Atlanta, Sunday’s highs approached 70 degrees, but by Tuesday morning, lows could drop to around 28 degrees, based on forecasts.

This sudden cold snap poses a potential risk for travelers celebrating New Year’s Eve, especially since recent rains have made for slick roads, leading to black ice and hazardous driving conditions.

Conditions could become quite severe in some areas, with morning temperatures dipping into the single digits for cities like Minneapolis and Chicago, along with regions in the interior Northeast.

According to the National Weather Service, Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport recorded 5.8 inches of snow within the last 24 hours, with more anticipated.

Forecasts suggest that temperatures in much of the eastern U.S. will gradually return to normal levels as the transition from December to January occurs.

However, another wave of chilly air is expected to settle over the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeast as the new year begins.

As conditions evolve, being prepared is key. Winter weather can be treacherous and unpredictable.
