East Oakland Teen’s Academic Triumph
A teenager from East Oakland has accomplished an impressive feat by earning a remarkable 4.3 GPA. Dominique Antoine Jr., also known as “Puda,” announced on National College Decision Day, May 1, that he will be attending Louisiana State University after applying to a staggering 31 schools.
The senior at Fremont High School shared his plans to study biology within a pre-med program. “It was tough narrowing down my choices,” he remarked, noting that every school he applied to accepted him. “There is no refusal!” he said with pride.
Antoine’s potential choices included prestigious universities like UCLA and UC Berkeley, which are known for their competitive academic programs.
He also utilized the Common Black College Application, allowing him to widen his reach to various historically black colleges and universities.
His finalist list featured institutions such as Howard University, Tennessee State University, Morgan State University, and Syracuse University. Ultimately, he felt drawn to LSU. “I trusted my instincts because I knew where my heart was,” Antoine explained.
Interestingly, LSU was the first university to accept him and provided a great scholarship package based on merit.
His accomplishments extend beyond academics, particularly in a school facing challenges like low graduation rates and reading comprehension levels.
Coach Derek Smith remarked on Antoine’s potential, recalling his first impression from middle school. Fremont High School Principal Nidiya Baez noted that Antoine actively includes students with disabilities, showing a commitment to making them feel welcomed.
College readiness specialist Jalisa Collins commented on Antoine’s character, emphasizing his empathy and humility, qualities that set him apart.
While some schools have shown interest in his basketball talent, Antoine insists that his academic pursuits take precedence. As a multisport athlete, he has also participated in soccer and track. His experiences with sports injuries have motivated him to pursue a career as an orthopedic surgeon. “I went back and forth to orthopedics, MRIs, X-rays, physical exams, etc.,” he shared. “I felt very relieved that they helped me.”
Growing up as the second of six children, Antoine acknowledges that his family’s unwavering support has played a pivotal role in his journey.
