Brett Favre Emphasizes Faith During Christmas
Football icon Brett Favre took to social media over the Christmas period to share that faith in Jesus plays a vital role in his life. He encouraged his followers to consider embracing Christ.
This isn’t the first instance where the Pro Football Hall of Famer has expressed his religious beliefs, yet his holiday post still drew attention.
Favre, a three-time NFL MVP and 11-time Pro Bowl athlete, is best known for his tenure with the Green Bay Packers, where he participated in two Super Bowls, winning one. Renowned for his toughness, he was regarded as one of the most durable quarterbacks in football history.
He last stepped onto the field in 2010.
“For over 20 years, I’ve raised my hands in celebration at bars,” he shared in his Instagram Christmas message. “Now, I raise my hands to the One who bestowed all my talents upon me—Jesus Christ, the King of my life. While I don’t claim to be perfect, my aim is to glorify Christ and I pray that my faith continues to grow.”
He added, “Whether you’re alone or surrounded by loved ones, have a Merry Christmas. If you haven’t already, I urge you to place your faith in the One who saves: Jesus Christ.”
Favre also referenced Ephesians 2:8-9, which states, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not the result of works, so that no one may boast.”
He continued to play in the NFL until 2010, leading the Minnesota Vikings to the division title and an appearance in the NFC Championship Game at the age of 40 during the 2009 season.
In a 2019 speech at Liberty University, Favre discussed how a crucial event in his spiritual journey occurred during the 2003 season, when he played one of the most remarkable games of his career just a day after his father passed away.
Despite concerns that he might not play, he took to the field and threw four touchdown passes, contributing to a 41-7 victory over Oakland. Favre remembered sharing a prayer with his teammates beforehand.
“After retirement, reflecting on that game, I came to realize that I, and maybe you too, often find ourselves asking, ‘God, show me you’re real, just for a moment,’” Favre reflected in 2019. “You search for those signs, but often overlook them when they’re right in front of you. For me, the signs became apparent in how the game unfolded.”
