Eric Adams’ Tenure as NYC Mayor Comes to a Close

In a fitting finale, Eric Adams wrapped up his term as New York City’s mayor on Wednesday, celebrating with a New Year’s Eve ball drop in Times Square—an event that mirrored the very start of his tenure.

As the clock struck 11:59 p.m., Adams, known for his “party mayor” persona, pressed the button to initiate the ball drop, marking the end not just of his time in office but also of 2025, according to his final press schedule.

Adams confirmed that he would attend the inauguration of his successor, Zoran Mamdani, who previously ran against him. Mamdani, a self-identified socialist, is seen by some as having overtaken the moderate Democrats, including Adams.

Adams’ term ended amid controversies, including his surprising commitment to leverage cryptocurrencies in combatting anti-Semitism. This vague initiative reflects a challenging legacy, accentuated by a polling result where absolutely no voters recalled him as among the city’s finer mayors.

Lee Miringoff, director of Marist College’s Institute of Public Opinion, commented that the scandals surrounding Adams will likely overshadow his achievements. “His scandal will define his accomplishments,” Miringoff noted, suggesting that any accomplishments might only be acknowledged later in discussions.

Some supporters, like Rev. Al Sharpton, argue that achievements such as reduced crime rates and the implementation of the comprehensive “City of Jesus” housing initiative could help improve how history recalls Adams, despite the negative perceptions stemming from his controversies.

Adams’ time in office was marred by a series of scandals, many rooted in his choice of staff, resulting in investigations involving various associates. Moreover, Adams faced federal scrutiny himself, becoming the first New York City mayor to be charged with federal bribery and corruption linked to his luxury travel arrangements.

This situation became contentious, particularly because of alleged connections with President Trump that sparked suspicions of corrupt bargain deals. While Adams denied these accusations, they undoubtedly hurt his chances for re-election.

Adams claimed the allegations were retaliatory acts from the Biden administration due to his outspoken views on the immigration crisis, suggesting racial motivations behind the issue.

Jay Jacobs, chair of the state Democratic Party, remarked that it would take time to fairly evaluate Adams’ contributions, given that the controversies led to his single-term status. However, he pointed out that, in general, the city had been doing well, particularly in terms of security.

“He worked closely with the governor to reduce crime and restore order,” Jacobs said, emphasizing that, despite ongoing challenges, “things are better for most people.”
